Guizhou being as mountainous as it is remained a very isolated part of China until recently, with the majority of these villages only getting paved roads and connecting up the China's economy in a meaningful way ten years ago. Despite the region seeing an upswing of tourism, especially during the past two years, these towns drop everything when it comes to rice harvest. Rice remains the backbone of these hillside villages.
